Canon R8 – best content creator full frame camera
The Canon R8 is the only real alternative to the Lumix S9 in its price range. The Canon EOS R8 is more of a true hybrid camera, with a viewfinder, hot shoe, headphone jack and electronic first-curtain mechanical shutter. It also has a comfortable grip (the most ergonomic and comfortable of all the cameras I own), plenty of buttons and a photo/video switch. It also has 4k 60p uncropped video ovresampled from a 6k sensor, a rare feature in this range of FF cameras (both the pricier Nikon Z5II and the Lumix S5II have a 1.5 x crop).
It has 2 main flaws, the lack of IBIS, which is noticeable in b-roll footage and the small LP-E17 battery, which has to be changed often when on an outside shoot. Both of theses flaws are irrelevant for talking head shots or can be mitigated in the studio with a dummy battery and use of a gimbal if stabilization is needed. The other area where Canon (in general) falls short is its closed lens ecosystem and lack of budget options – the only real budget option is the RF 50mm 1.8 STM (a great budget option for under $200).
I added the Canon R50V as an APS-C alternative – I did not test the camera but did extensively research it when it came out. With nits box style ergonomics, excellent Dual Pixel autofocus, a front-facing record button and tally lamp, the vertical mounting point, Canon Log 3, it offers a compact alternative to the bigger full frame cameras and can be a great taking head studio camera. The one main disadvantage, compared to other systems, is the lack of good budget 3 party lenses for this system (non for the full frame).
