A new Chinese Fuji X-M5 review video has been the center of a heated debate. It shows the X-M5 in positive light, it feels more of a promotional video than a review. It is hard to tell what they are saying as it is in Chinese, YouTube doesn’t offer any subtitles, and there is no transcript that we could translate ourselves.
What sparked the controversy is the autofocus part where we can see it preforming well, without any major hunting. Some have suggested that this section has been altered in post-production as there is a discrepancy in the resolution of the autofocus box on the cat’s eye (which is in HD resolution) and the resolution of the other interface data (which looks to be at 480p).
Comparing it to other images I think the box does look crisper than the other data on the interface (numbers, words) also in other screenshots. The difference that I see is the higher resolution of the cat compared to the lower resolution of the model – is this difference due to the settings? The cat portion is shot at 4K 30p (29,97), F 5.6, SS 160, ISO 400, STD picture profile while the model was shot at 4K 60p (1.44x crop), F 2.8 SS 1600, ISO 160, NH picture profile.
Comparing the model screenshot to another (Chinese) review video we can see that they do look similar in resolution.
Below are two additional reviews of the X-M5 where you can see additional autofocus and stabilization tests:
Here is a comparison of screenshots of the autofocus tests done in the three videos:
We are getting close to November and the controversy will not die down until Fuji releases that promised firmware updates and the X-M5 and we get more reliable tests with the official updated firmware.
