Fujifilm just dropped the highly anticipated firmware updates for its X-H2s, X-H2 and GFX100 II and the first feedback form usurers is positive!
Update versions 7.10 for X-H2s, 5.10 for X-H2 and 2.3 for GFX100 II have all include “Improved AF focusing accuracy and AF tracking” with the vague description of “The AF algorithm has been partially revised to improve focusing accuracy and subject tracking performance.” Partially revised – does this mean we will get additional revisions of the AF and this is just the first update Fuji managed to get through in the November 2024 update? Or is are they just trolling their consumers – it can also be a translation error.
First X-H2s test are promising
Immediately after the release many content creators have started doing tests and the feedback is promising:
We will surely be getting a lot of videos coming out in the next few days with detailed test done in video and stills mode.
Here is the first published video by Omar, where he tests video eye tracking and product placement in front of the eyes with the X-H2s, which unlike the X-S20 and the X-M5 doesn’t have product priority mode:
Other Firmware Updates
Besides the autofocus focusing accuracy and tracking, the November firmware update also brings a new F-Log2 C mode to the movie shooting menu, allows users to “for the reproduction of high chroma colors that was difficult to reproduce with “F-Log2” and expands the color editable range in ACES space and BT.709”. A welcome addition for users of the F-Log – it will be interesting to see how taxing these new F-Log2 C files will be on editing, particularly Windows computers.
The also added a TIME CODE SYNC. SETTING which allows synchronization of multiple movie clips on various USB devices.
They also addressed some camera freezing issues that some users have been complaining about on their X-H2s/ X-H2 cameras.
Should you update to the new firmware?
It is always a good idea to wait a couple of days before updating your Fuji camera to the latest update – give the other testers time to find any potential bugs. So my advice is, if you don’t urgently need to update just be patient for a few more days and then update your camera.
In the meantime if you are looking for a quick autofocus fix for your camera try out Camera Conspiracies settings of AF Speed at 0 and Tracking Sensitivity at 3 that seem to work better in eye detection.
What about X-T5 and X-s20?
If this update goes well, we might expect the same updates coming to other Fuji cameras, like the X-T5 and the X-S20, sooner rather than later – my guess is in less than a month, right before Christmas. They did mention that firmware updates will be coming for these cameras before the end of the year so we are on schedule.
